Radon Testing
January is Radon Action month, so please test your house. You can hire a professional state licensed, certified tester using a highly sophisticated continuous monitor or you can purchase a do-it-yourself kit from your local hardware store. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and smokers are six times more likely to get lung cancer in homes with high radon levels. Radon is a colorless odorless and tasteless radioactive gas. Radon testing has indicated that 85% of homes have HIGH radon levels. The EPA recommends testing your house and radon levels of 4.0pCi/l or higher should be mitigated.
Understanding your Septic System
An on-lot wastewater treatment system, or "septic system", may be the most expensive single component of your new home. Therefore, it is important that you know its condition before you buy. A Septic Inspection provides you with information about the septic system components and current operating conditions. Inspection results are based on the experience and expertise of a knowledgeable inspector, information provided by the current owner of the property and observable conditions at the time of the inspection.
Recall Check
Since 1974, American citizens have been protected from dangerous items in their homes by federal law. Congress prescribed a system whereby if a manufacturer designed a dangerous product, they MUST recall all those items and FIX THEM FOR FREE! The problem in the law is that most often it's up to the consumer, to find out whether appliances are potential fire or safety hazards! There is a database designed and managed by the government, but you would have to wade through 195 MILLION recalled items to find out if a dishwasher or air conditioner is a hazard to your family.
